Irene (Pearson) Doughty Obituary

Irene P Doughty, 92, passed away peacefully on Monday August 30, 2021 after a short illness. She was born March 15, 1929 in Medford, MA, the daughter of the late Charles C. and Edith I. (Carrier) Pearson.

Irene graduated from Belmont High School and Boston University, where she met Alfred, the love of her life.  She also received a Master’s Degree in education from Lesley College.

Irene was an avid tennis player, she taught tennis privately in Reading, competed in tournaments in Jaffrey NH, and coached the Boston State College Women’s Tennis team.

She was a founder and director of the Reading Scholarship Foundation, a member of the Reading Society of Craftsman, town meeting member, and active in the Episcopal Church and school affairs. She loved genealogy and traced the family tree back many generations.

Irene and Al traveled extensively around the country and in Europe, making many lasting friendships along the way.  They summered in Ogunquit, ME and wintered in Naples, FL.

Irene loved working with stained glass and seashells she collected in Naples. She won many awards at the annual Sanibel Island Sea Shell Competition.

Irene was the loving wife of the late Alfred T. Doughty for 68 years.  She will be dearly missed by her 3 sons and family; Charles "Chaz" Doughty and his wife Mary of Tyngsborough, MA, Alfred T. “Biff” Doughty Jr. of Reading, MA and Steven W. Doughty and Sandra Shaw of Methuen, MA; several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Irene’s beautiful smile and engaging personality endeared her to all who met her. She was loved by all and will truly be missed by her family and friends.   

A Celebration of Life will be held in the fall.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Reading Scholarship Foundation, Inc; PO Box 492; Reading, MA 01867.
