Loving father and grandfather

DRACUT – John P. Mathson, age 80, a resident of Dracut and a former longtime resident of Winchester, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday morning, May 31, 2018 at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover, NH.  He was the loving husband of the late Marcia L. (Goodrow) Mathson who died this past September.

Born in Woburn on February 28, 1938, he was a son of the late Paul and Katherine (Clinton) Mathson.  He was educated in the Woburn school system and was a graduate of Woburn High School.

Prior to his retirement, John worked as a machinist for Polaroid for over 42 years.

John enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.  Especially, vacations at Lake Winnipesaukee where the family took part in the annual ‘Mini-Golf Tournament’ the results of which John chronicled all 43 years in ‘The Book’.  John loved playing Rummy 500 and especially enjoyed teaching the next generations how to play.  He was an avid reader and still had the very first book ever given to him by his aunt.  He searched old book stores for ‘Tom Quest’ and ‘Hardy Boy’ books and had a complete first edition series of the Hardy Boys which he was proud to hand down to his first grandson, Mickey.

He is survived by his children, Paul Mathson and his wife Leslie of Nashua, Margaret Mathson of Barrington, NH and John Mathson and his wife MaryBeth of Nashua; six grandchildren, Sarah DuBois and her husband Bill, Lydia, Mickey, Emma, Joshua and Ben Mathson of Nashua, NH; three great grandchildren, Liam, Arya and Lucas DuBois; and he was predeceased by his loving daughter, Karen, who died on July 19, 1999.

MATHSON – died in Dover, NH on May 31, 2018.  Mr. John P. Mathson, age 80, a resident of Dracut and husband of the late Marcia L. (Goodrow) Mathson.  Relatives and friends may call at the TYNGSBOROUGH FUNERAL HOME, 4 Cassaway Dr., Tyngsborough on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral Tuesday morning with a funeral mass to be celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Magdalen Parish, 95 Lakeview Ave., Tyngsborough.  Those wishing to attend the funeral mass are asked to meet at church.  His committal service will follow in Woodbrook Cemetery, Woburn.
